Ever since acquainting myself with G.O and learning a little bit about his artistic journey, I have been on a quest to find as many copies of Tykeys’ Ty Project No. 1, literally the first full studio album he recorded (to my knowledge any way). When I find a copy, I buy it. This past week, I found another copy so that always seems to ignite my desire to revisit Tykeys’ performances and it occurred to me that 연상연하 [Old & Young], one of the two singles released from the album was a perfect candidate for a Vocal Virtuosity moment. Specifically, the live performance from the Tykeys showcase way back in February or March 2007. The studio version is great. But my favorite live version, vocally speaking, is the showcase performance. Continue reading

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 672
I am sorry but lately Tykeys have commandeered my playlists and when that happens, I invariably want to share the greatness of G.O’s work. Even though I recently shared an I’m Sorry clip, I am traveling down that road once more here today as there can never be too much vocal virtuosity in an eight day span. I think G.O’s recent (and nostalgic) update where he posted a picture of himself from his Tykeys’ days has triggered my desire to revisit the memories and the music. Today a short clip of I’m Sorry (yes, again) from Tykey’s visit to the SBS Power FM Cultwo Show back on 2 August 2007.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 643
There are literally dozens of words beginning with the letter R that could describe, suit and complement G.O for this installment of The ABC’s of G.O. The first that comes to mind is romantic. I have no reference to confirm he is, but G.O has intimated things in past interviews that would suggest he is a bit of a romantic. Likewise, the way in which he interprets love ballads would also support my belief. I know ‘romantic’ is an easy go to and G.O may even appreciate being described so. But I think there is a word that rings even more true about him. That word is resilient.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 578
It is Sunday and we are wrapping up yet another week of G.O’s service. Sundays always suggest a day of rest and leisure and as such, seem like perfect days for something sweet and inspirational. I completely forgot about the cover of A Whole New World from the Aladdin OST G.O and Su sang together back during Tykeys days. When Tykeys were being introduced to the world in 2007, it was wonderful that they were given a platform to showcase their vocal skills singing in English as well as in their native Korean. When G.O sings, his voice automatically translates the music into its own language regardless of the song’s given language. That language being of course, the language of the heart. It has no real translation and is all vibration and sensation. As a native English-speaker however, when G.O sings in English, it makes experiencing his art extra special.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 493
Back on 29 May 2007, the fresh-on-the scene R&B trio Tykeys visited the KBS studios to record an episode of the music variety-talk show, Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter. You may recall way back on Day 36 I shared Tykeys’ amazing performance of Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You which the group performed for the audience that evening. Maybe it was before (or perhaps it was after that performance), Do Hyun took some time to chat with Lee Jung and got to know a little bit about his three young protégés. We learned that Su could rap, Hyun Jung could b-boy and G.O had rhythm, could dance, and was completely adorable through it all.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 430
It was exactly four months ago today that I had an In The Practice Room With Tykeys moment here on the Countdown and I recall at that time that I wanted to save Tykeys’ rehearsal of 연상연하 [Old & Young] for as long as I could hold off on sharing it because it is one of my favorites and I just wanted to delay the pleasure just a little. Thankfully, I plan some posts well in advance so when I saw this on my countdown log journal for today, I was so excited. I cannot believe I refrained from moving it up sooner, but having waited is making it that much sweeter. For this 430th day of G.O’s service, we travel back to 2007 to sit in on Tykeys’ energetic rehearsal of 연상연하 [Old & Young].
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 402
Just tell me how . . . how I can rid my heart of this pain? Just tell me how, how did I not see the love right here in front of me? Just tell me how, how it is that I have only seen you as a friend? Just tell me how, how is it that I love you now? This seems to be the running theme of Tykeys’ gospel-infused R&B song, 말해버려 [Just Tell Me], one of my absolute favorite cuts on the incredibly rich and neo-soulifric Ty Project No. 1. Every song on this wonderful album that features G.O’s expressive and impassioned vocals is a Vocal Virtuosity moment and I am thrilled to have the time to expose all of them before he concludes his military service.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 358
Over the past few days I have been giving lots and lots of love to G.O’s past involvement with the neo-soul R&B trio, Tykeys. It is part of his past that I feel was an incredible stepping stone to get him where he is today and not just musically. I think G.O’s time spent with Baek Soo Kyung and Kim Hyun Jung gave him experience and direction that supported and indeed fueled his creativity. He learned about synergy and collaboration which I believe every artist needs, and which he has become keenly adept at. My G.O One Shot for today is a little homage to G.O’s Tykeys stage presence, in .gif form.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 356
My recent time travel to 2007 keeps coaxing me back for more, and with good reason. I have denied myself the pleasure of sharing Tykeys’ 연상연하 [Old and Young] for almost a year now. Yes…a year!! The second single from their amazing Ty Project No. 1 is a stand out neo-soul treasure all about (what some may deem) the forbidden love between a younger man and older woman. And as many of you know, there was a MV released along with the song…starring our dreamy main vocal as the leading ‘younger’ man.
The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 340
Other than getting the opportunity to talk about G.O every day, another plus about this series for me is going back and watching performances or MVs that I may have not watched in a good long while (or sometimes never even seen before ~ it happens). I have to admit that often times, it feels like I am experiencing the excitement of seeing these moments for the first time all over again. I woke up this morning and I really felt like hearing, seeing and experiencing some Tykeys. True, every day I rev my playlist up, there is a good chance that a Tykeys song will find its way into the shuffle – it’s a given for me. A little visual provocation will always boost the experience and such is the case when watching the MV for Tykeys’ classic R&B groove, I’m Sorry. Continue reading
