The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 493

Back on 29 May 2007, the fresh-on-the scene R&B trio Tykeys visited the KBS studios to record an episode of the music variety-talk show, Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter. You may recall way back on Day 36 I shared Tykeys’ amazing performance of Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You which the group performed for the audience that evening. Maybe it was before (or perhaps it was after that performance), Do Hyun took some time to chat with Lee Jung and got to know a little bit about his three young protégés. We learned that Su could rap, Hyun Jung could b-boy and G.O had rhythm, could dance, and was completely adorable through it all.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 470

The sweetness of debut G.O always sends a flutter or two through my heart. Of course, I find him to be completely endearing in every era, this is true. But when I take a look back at the early, early days, like debut days, I see an eager excitement in the smile of his eyes. Bright and anticipating. Full of hope and passion. We all know G.O was no stranger to the idol/group lifestyle and dynamic having lived it briefly with Tykeys. But I remember an interview where he said something to the effect that when he joined MBLAQ, it was like he was reborn, as if he was getting a second chance at life. A life he envisioned himself living, the life of an artist creating music that would touch hearts. This desire to create something beautiful and gift it to the world is perhaps the foundational aspect of fan service. Today some early shades of G.O’s sweet fan service from way back in December 2009.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 430

It was exactly four months ago today that I had an In The Practice Room With Tykeys moment here on the Countdown and I recall at that time that I wanted to save Tykeys’ rehearsal of 연상연하 [Old & Young] for as long as I could hold off on sharing it because it is one of my favorites and I just wanted to delay the pleasure just a little. Thankfully, I plan some posts well in advance so when I saw this on my countdown log journal for today, I was so excited. I cannot believe I refrained from moving it up sooner, but having waited is making it that much sweeter. For this 430th day of G.O’s service, we travel back to 2007 to sit in on Tykeys’ energetic rehearsal of 연상연하 [Old & Young].

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 409

The agony of that moment when the tease of yet another western R&B song slips into the infinite and we are left wondering, what if . . . This is how I feel when I watch a backstage moment with Tykeys where G.O not only showed his playful maknae side, he also revealed how deep, lush and expansive his playbook of western songs truly was (is) when he teased with a couple lines from Craig David’s Walking Away.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 405

While it is true that G.O has had a lot of experience being the younger brother, much of that experience comes from being the younger brother of two older sisters. Outside of perhaps his peers and well, yes of course, his brother-in-law, he has not been the younger brother to an older brother. And before you Seungholics start screaming that indeed G.O has been and is a younger brother, I will say that I see your point; but really guys, Seung Ho is only three weeks to-the-day older than G.O. I think those two perhaps view themselves on more of an equal playing field. Nevertheless, I believe with all of my heart that G.O views Seung Ho as a brother (and an older one at that) not only in the colleague/peer sense, but in a family sense. Where am I going with this you might ask? Well, since I have been showing Tykeys quite a bit of love as of late, I wanted to touch on an early younger/older brother experience. G.O was Tykeys’ maknae after all and Kim Hyun Jung indeed his hyung. When I look at early pictures of the two, as well as their overall dynamic, I am convinced G.O endeared Hyun Jung as a more than just a band mate, he was indeed family and yes, an older brother. The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 403

One of the many recurring themes and/or thoughts I have shared in quite a few blog posts I have written about G.O has been that you can set any song in front him and he will be able to sing it. And not just sing it, he will feel it. Or better yet, absorb it by allowing it to mix and mingle with his own history, experiences and emotions. So then, it does not surprise me that he gave a Celine Dion song a try. No, it does not surprise me at all.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 402

Just tell me how . . . how I can rid my heart of this pain? Just tell me how, how did I not see the love right here in front of me? Just tell me how, how it is that I have only seen you as a friend? Just tell me how, how is it that I love you now? This seems to be the running theme of Tykeys’ gospel-infused R&B song, 말해버려 [Just Tell Me], one of my absolute favorite cuts on the incredibly rich and neo-soulifric Ty Project No. 1. Every song on this wonderful album that features G.O’s expressive and impassioned vocals is a Vocal Virtuosity moment and I am thrilled to have the time to expose all of them before he concludes his military service.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 372

Gratitude is learned at very early age. I am certain most all of us were taught as children that when you receive something, you say thank you. But not all are as well-versed in the art of being gracious for things that not necessarily tangible: admiration, support, respect, love. Often we seem to forget that these too are great gifts to receive and as such should require equal gratitude even if we cannot touch them or hold them. G.O understands the art of gratitude. And I suspect it has been with him ever since his cognizance developed and he could understand the concept. He certainly understood it extremely well in the early days of his career. I thought it was a good day to share another installment of G.O’s Fabled Fan Service here on the countdown.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 358

Over the past few days I have been giving lots and lots of love to G.O’s past involvement with the neo-soul R&B trio, Tykeys. It is part of his past that I feel was an incredible stepping stone to get him where he is today and not just musically. I think G.O’s time spent with Baek Soo Kyung and Kim Hyun Jung gave him experience and direction that supported and indeed fueled his creativity. He learned about synergy and collaboration which I believe every artist needs, and which he has become keenly adept at. My G.O One Shot for today is a little homage to G.O’s Tykeys stage presence, in .gif form.
