The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 81

Nothing could have prepared me for the moment the curtain opened at the Universal Arts Center Theater in Seoul on the evening of April 8, 2014, and G.O, very powerfully in his best rock & roll swag, began to walk downstage towards the audience in the opening moments of Seopyeonje. It was a moment I won’t soon forget and one etched in my heart forever. For this 81st day of G.O’s service, I want to focus on a later scene however, when he sang The Platters’ classic hit from 1958, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes ~ in English! There will never be words adequate to describe the emotions that rushed through me at that moment….or even throughout the whole of this amazing musical.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 80

When neo-soul artist Eric Benét released his second album, Hurricane in June 2005, little did he know the kind of impression that album was going to make on a young vocalist in South Korea. Of the fourteen tracks on Benét’s album, four resonated strongly with our beautiful main vocal man and frankly, I cannot choose a favorite of those four because all are equally amazing. In 2012, however, G.O gave some very special love and attention to Cracks of My Broken Heart.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 79

There are moments when I really begin to think about everything G.O has been through in his career. He really has crammed a lot of experience in a short amount of years, when you think of it. During his time with MBLAQ from debut to the present, he (either solo or with the group) has had the opportunity to endorse many a product. But what I did not realize until very recent is that he endorsed (and/or modeled) for the Mito Shop clothing line when he was with Tykeys.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 78

Over the course of his career, G.O has been fortunate to collaborate with other artists which has not only yielded some pretty fantastic music, but also secured his reputation in the business as a skilled and talented artist with an incredible work ethic.  I am certain he also has learned so much in the wake of those collaborations. On this 78th day of G.O’s service I am rotating in The Heavenly Collaborations, and will start with his wondrous collaboration with Yiruma.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 76

When I committed myself to a post a day for each day G.O completes his military service, I knew it would require effort, discipline and stamina. I am discovering that no matter how demanding this project may become over the course of the many days ahead, the more I learn about G.O, the more determined I am to tell the world about his unmistakable and amazing talent. This series has allowed me to look deeper at that talent, especially when I get to write about his time on the Immortal Song 2 stage. His September 3, 2011 performance on Ballad v. Dance night completely derailed me.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 75

For an actor, I would suspect that a one-dimensional character would perhaps be easier to interpret but ultimately lack challenge. The tender rebel Kang Hyun Woo in the jukebox musical 광화문 연가 [Gwanghwamun Sonata] was a demanding role for a first time musical theater actor. Nuanced and layered, it gave G.O the wonderful opportunity to explore his range as actor playing a character opposite to his own personality and demeanor.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 73

A sweet seventy-three days into G.O’s military service and I am finally revisiting some of his amazing OST work! In this series I have only written about one so far, his Numbness from the Madame Antoine OST and that was 70 posts ago!!! Admittedly, I am still trying to get my footing here with these daily posts and I am trying to be judicious in offering a little something from all he has done. Likewise, I am trying to make it interesting, but sometimes my heart takes over and things get wishy-washy. Fair warning, this will be one of those posts because his song from the Doctor Stranger OST, 내일이 안 올 것처럼 [Like Tomorrow Won’t Come] is my favorite of his OST songs, and probably one of the most touching, emotional and beautiful love ballads he has ever sung…as well as also had a hand in composing.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 72

One cannot deny that G.O and Jung Juri had a special chemistry working opposite each other. I think one of the reasons they worked well together was that they both had great comedic timing, were not afraid to push the envelope a little, and simply liked each other. G.O has a natural comfort around women (perhaps because he was raised with two older sisters) and Juri knew that G.O possessed a very special intelligence that gave him a quick and playful wit.
