The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 484

I know it seems like it was just yesterday that I posted a Vocal Virtuosity moment here on the Countdown but in reality, it has been a week. This is how fast time is moving. It is ridiculous, but I am not complaining. Before we know it, it will be February and discharge day. I hope everyone is preparing for the celebration but more importantly, having G.O back. We still have some time here to ruminate over the treasures he has given us these past ten years so I will take a deep breath, calm my excitement and go deep into the vault today for a perfect throwback moment where G.O took the stage on 6 December 2009 at Rain’s Fan Meeting in Japan, and sang one of Rain’s most iconic songs, Love Story*Melt*

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 468

I adore a demonstrative singer. I love to watch a song invade the very psyche of a vocalist and render him helpless to its melody, lyrics and emotion. The kind of connect with a song that makes it become the absolute control center of every nerve ending in his body. So much so that the song moves through a vocalist at will controlling all senses. This is what I believe a song does to G.O. I have written about it often here because it is something that I find fascinating about him as vocalist. I love that he lets a song in, and lets it have its way with him. We have reached the letter D in my quirky sub-category of this countdown and my choice for the fourth letter of the alphabet is demonstrative.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 416

I know that any time we are particularly missing the sounds of G.O’s beautiful voice, we only need open up our music apps (or pop a CD into the player) and choose from one of the many MBLAQ, Tykeys and/or his solo songs in our libraries to soothe that yearning. But every so often it is nice to detour from those libraries to get lost in an old impromptu radio broadcast performance, a cover song that perhaps holds deep meaning for him, or one he simply loves to sing. Kim Kwang Seok’s 사랑했지만 [Though I Loved You] might be one of those songs. A lovely melody. The poetic lyrics. The big notes. Yes, a perfect match for our tender main vocal.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 412

I don’t believe I am exaggerating when I say that from 2009 through 2013, the men of MBLAQ (collectively and individually) were the undisputed kings of variety. I think you will find truth and subsequent proof in this bold statement by watching (or re-watching) some of their show appearances and specifically those shows that were built around them. Idol Manager was one of those very shows. I have not yet shared any IM moments here on the Countdown ~ gasp! Today, I have a particular yearning to reminisce. My usual M.O here with episodic shows has been to choose a random episode and hope that it held a good many G.O memorable moments to share. For my first visit to Idol Manager during this countdown series, I am choosing Episode 5. It is ripe with so much goodness, I almost don’t know where to begin.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 409

The agony of that moment when the tease of yet another western R&B song slips into the infinite and we are left wondering, what if . . . This is how I feel when I watch a backstage moment with Tykeys where G.O not only showed his playful maknae side, he also revealed how deep, lush and expansive his playbook of western songs truly was (is) when he teased with a couple lines from Craig David’s Walking Away.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 403

One of the many recurring themes and/or thoughts I have shared in quite a few blog posts I have written about G.O has been that you can set any song in front him and he will be able to sing it. And not just sing it, he will feel it. Or better yet, absorb it by allowing it to mix and mingle with his own history, experiences and emotions. So then, it does not surprise me that he gave a Celine Dion song a try. No, it does not surprise me at all.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 388

Is :56 seconds of G.O singing an excerpt from a ballad sufficient enough to place it here on the Countdown in the Vocal Virtuosity category? You bet it is. Back in May 2010, just prior to the release of MBLAQ’s second mini album Y, MBLAQ’s handsome hyung line made a stop at the MNET radio studios. In under a minute, the combination of G.O’s voice accompanied by Seung Ho’s piano continually proves to me that these two artists were perhaps always destined to work together. Indeed, this post can hold equal weight in the Heavenly Collaborations category.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 292

While I have been reserving the Retro Room for songs of days long gone by, indeed longer than three years, I felt the strong urge to make sure G.O’s beautiful performance of John Legend’s All of Me from the I.Callist Idol Vocal Concert back in February is filed securely here in the Retro Room among the others. Legend’s song was released in 2013, not very retro I know, but I bend my rules every now and then when I am compelled to share moments of G.O’s moving and poignant interpretations of songs that surely mean so much to him.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 289

I have always believed that G.O was (and still is) a consummate student of music. Ever learning and perfecting his own art, I have to guess that his music collection is more vast and wide than the oceans between us. Indeed he is extremely well-versed in music and has covered the songs of many music legends, east and west. As many of you know, there were often those times when during a variety show or in-studio radio show appearance, he was asked to sing and I have to believe there were times he was prepared to do so. But there were times when he most likely was not and was asked to sing off-the-cuff as it were. Live. At that moment. During the broadcast. I think the SBS Ten Ten Club broadcast of 15 July 2010 was one of those off-the-cuff moments when he regaled the audience with a few lines from DBSK’s  주문 [Mirotic].

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 274

It takes a lot of courage for me to listen to G.O’s cover of Javier Colón’s Song For Your Tears but it has been staring at me from the shelf in The Retro Room for some time now. I knew that sooner or later I was going to want pull it down, dust it off, listen to it, and subsequently feel my heart shatter into a million pieces. G.O being away and missing him compounds the aching but this song is just too good and his performance of it during the Zepp and Sensation tours of 2013, a master vocal class with every note.
