The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 92

I think I can forget you
I try to comfort myself like this
But after trying to get rid of these feelings again and again
My yearning for you is endless . . .

I have to wonder when G.O agreed to appear on the January 28, 2011 episode of You Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook, if he sat down with Hee Yeol and said, “I want to sing Kim Gun Mo’s 미련 [Lingering Affection],” or if it was decided by You Hee Yeol that he would, or perhaps the production team? My first inclination is to say G.O chose it because it is exactly the type of ballad our man with the golden voice has become a master at interpreting.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 76

When I committed myself to a post a day for each day G.O completes his military service, I knew it would require effort, discipline and stamina. I am discovering that no matter how demanding this project may become over the course of the many days ahead, the more I learn about G.O, the more determined I am to tell the world about his unmistakable and amazing talent. This series has allowed me to look deeper at that talent, especially when I get to write about his time on the Immortal Song 2 stage. His September 3, 2011 performance on Ballad v. Dance night completely derailed me.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 73

A sweet seventy-three days into G.O’s military service and I am finally revisiting some of his amazing OST work! In this series I have only written about one so far, his Numbness from the Madame Antoine OST and that was 70 posts ago!!! Admittedly, I am still trying to get my footing here with these daily posts and I am trying to be judicious in offering a little something from all he has done. Likewise, I am trying to make it interesting, but sometimes my heart takes over and things get wishy-washy. Fair warning, this will be one of those posts because his song from the Doctor Stranger OST, 내일이 안 올 것처럼 [Like Tomorrow Won’t Come] is my favorite of his OST songs, and probably one of the most touching, emotional and beautiful love ballads he has ever sung…as well as also had a hand in composing.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 70

70 days!!! Seriously, the days are flying by!! After grabbing his first win on the Immortal Song 2 stage, I would suspect that G.O began to really settle into the competition. Even as humble as he is and (at times) self-doubting, I think his competitive juices were really beginning to fire up. Maintaining his ability to innovate, G.O duly wowed both audience and legend Kim Wan Sun with his jazzy rendition of her 오늘밤 [Tonight].

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 61

When my plane touched down in Chicago on February 15, 2016, I was not prepared for the barrage of tweets and messages I received upon powering up my phone with news of G.O’s enlistment. I went numb and initially had a difficult time watching all of the fan cams from the I.Callist show, specifically G.O’s performance of his opening song, 너를 위해 [For You]. In fact, it is only recently that I have been able to watch and/or listen to G.O sing this achingly beautiful song. At last, I am ready to revisit all three of his 너를 위해 [For You] performances and as such, I anticipate this to be a longer post in comparison to the others in this Countdown series mostly because I am so completely enamored with G.O’s love and respect for this song and the way in which he performs it.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 46

It does not surprise me that my favorite G.O Immortal Song 2 performance was one in which he did not take home top honors. Still…..have you listened to this one? I mean, really listened to it??? G.O took Ju Hyun Mi’s 추억으로 가는 당신 [Leaving For Memories] and ignited it into a searing rock ballad of epic proportions. And no, I am not exaggerating!

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 44

Sometimes I wonder what more we would have learned about Lee Tae Kyun had G.O not been on tour with MBLAQ during the filming of the drama 유령 [Ghost] and the writers had more license to build his character. It is only speculation on my part, but if the Blaq% Asia Tour did not conflict with filming, we may have possibly received more back story on the Cyber Crime Unit’s resident computer programmer whiz Tae Kyun as well as been flooded with more episode screen time for blossoming actor, G.O. I won’t be greedy, however, for when your bias is a musician first and foremost, any screen time in a drama is good screen time.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 40

Wow…….it has now been 40 days since G.O began his military service. I know some of his loving fans are probably thinking time is crawling, but I assure you, it is moving fast! For this lovely 40th day, I am returning to the Immortal Song 2 stage and will allow him, along with  his partner in ballad crime, Lim Jeong Hee, to shatter your hearts with the beautiful 사랑보다 깊은 상처 [A Wound Deeper Than Love].

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 38

There are a myriad of reasons as to why I believe G.O should pursue acting (in addition to his music) and I have touched on a few of those reasons here in previous posts. I am certain to repeat those reasons a few times. This is not because I am forgetful. No. It is because I want to keep subliminally encouraging him to consider more acting roles once he  completes his military service, if he is so inclined!
