The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 416

I know that any time we are particularly missing the sounds of G.O’s beautiful voice, we only need open up our music apps (or pop a CD into the player) and choose from one of the many MBLAQ, Tykeys and/or his solo songs in our libraries to soothe that yearning. But every so often it is nice to detour from those libraries to get lost in an old impromptu radio broadcast performance, a cover song that perhaps holds deep meaning for him, or one he simply loves to sing. Kim Kwang Seok’s 사랑했지만 [Though I Loved You] might be one of those songs. A lovely melody. The poetic lyrics. The big notes. Yes, a perfect match for our tender main vocal.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 403

One of the many recurring themes and/or thoughts I have shared in quite a few blog posts I have written about G.O has been that you can set any song in front him and he will be able to sing it. And not just sing it, he will feel it. Or better yet, absorb it by allowing it to mix and mingle with his own history, experiences and emotions. So then, it does not surprise me that he gave a Celine Dion song a try. No, it does not surprise me at all.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 369

Don’t you just love the G.OMir dynamic? It has to be one of the most playful inter-group relationships in popular music (Korean or otherwise) today. I really have no foundation on which to build that statement as I have no idea what the dynamics are in other groups since I follow none other than MBLAQ; but I think theirs would a standard by which I could measure all others. I am so ferociously biased, aren’t I? Bottom line with MBLAQ though (in my opinion) is that G.O is the special ingredient in the mix that always brings the playful out in others. Pairing G.O with the equally playful Mir as disc jockeys in charge of a radio studio lays the groundwork for good entertainment, albeit wrapped in mischief.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 336

Every moment G.O has the opportunity to sing will always have a place here in this countdown series and will generally find its way into the Vocal Virtuosity archives. Every single one. But I admit there will always be some moments that stand out much like the one I share today where G.O turns a ballad into a tender lullaby in his rendition of Hurricane during a January 2010 visit to the Volume Up radio show.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 289

I have always believed that G.O was (and still is) a consummate student of music. Ever learning and perfecting his own art, I have to guess that his music collection is more vast and wide than the oceans between us. Indeed he is extremely well-versed in music and has covered the songs of many music legends, east and west. As many of you know, there were often those times when during a variety show or in-studio radio show appearance, he was asked to sing and I have to believe there were times he was prepared to do so. But there were times when he most likely was not and was asked to sing off-the-cuff as it were. Live. At that moment. During the broadcast. I think the SBS Ten Ten Club broadcast of 15 July 2010 was one of those off-the-cuff moments when he regaled the audience with a few lines from DBSK’s  주문 [Mirotic].

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 285

As far as I am concerned, if a vocalist can hold the melody of a song in his (or her) voice and voice alone, and still sound good, that’s a skilled vocalist. Probably why I admire vocalists who can sing a cappella. Keeping everything in pitch while conveying passion and emotion – yes, that’s a gift. When I come across some G.O vocals with the music track removed, I feel vindicated in my belief that he is an extremely skilled vocalist (in addition to the evident artistry in how interprets music) who is tragically underrated and not nearly appreciated enough – in my opinion any way. So yes, I am hitting the countdown with another Vocal Virtuosity moment. This time I travel back to that playful moment in July 2011 during a MBC’s Shim Shim Tapa radio broadcast where G.O effortlessly belts out one of my absolute faves from Mona Lisa,  알면서 그래 [I Think You Know] and in this particular recording, the music track was removed so we can hear his effervescent, clear, strong and beautiful voice.
