The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 584

Beauty of whatever kind, in its supreme development, invariably excites the sensitive soul to tears. ~Edgar Allan Poe

Beauty and style documentaries can prove to be informative to keep up to date with trends but when your bias is thrown into the mix, they become even more engaging. I for one can appreciate a nice indirect tutorial on how to replicate the aesthetically appealing and indeed glamorous look our beautiful main vocal presented with the release of MBLAQ’s first full length studio album Blaq Style. In fact, I can only dream of aspiring to look as stunning. Nevertheless, it was a delight to watch long time make up artist to our men, Ham Kyung Shik, work his magic on G.O on the beauty and style show, Trend-E Beauty Project.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 582

On the evening of 20 September, G.O took to his Instagram account unexpectedly updating mid-week by pulling this amazing shot out of the archives and playfully captioning it:

종로 귀금속집 사장아들같네
[Like the son of a Jong-ro jewelry shop owner]

Ok, so to give this some context, what G.O is basically saying here is that he is looking all big and bold, Jong-ro style. However, he is being extremely humorous about it. Jong-ro is an area in Seoul where you might not see many hipsters for example, but will see many people of a more advanced age. Like in senior citizen age. <hahahaha> G.O is alluding to the fact that he is not being trendy or cute but rather is rocking it old school style. He’s so adorably silly!

G.O’s humor . . . I love it ad infinitum.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 580

I thought it might be nice to travel again with G.O to the land of his sexy airport style. Many of the times we have seen captures of him walking through any given airport, G.O has been masked and covered. Somehow it never detracts from how good he looks. True beauty, the kind that starts deep within, is impossible to hide.^^

Back in April of 2012, the men were making their way to the US. Ugh. Yes, before I knew them, MBLAQ did step foot in and perform on US soil. Los Angeles to be exact and at the iconic Hollywood Bowl for the 10th Annual Korean Times Music Festival. They left Seoul en route to LA on 26 April 2012 and G.O was a mysterious vision in black, denim and grey.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 579

I admit there may cause for debate when talking about the ‘visual‘ in a group. Honestly, no matter who is deemed the visual, our own personal biases will most likely hold that honor for us individually regardless of who owns the title officially. It is something that I have not always been familiar with as I do not think western groups traditionally have a member or members who are labeled as “the visual.” It wasn’t until I started my Korean entertainment education that I came across this idiosyncratic facet of the Korean group dynamic. I tend to get stubborn about the visual title holder in MBLAQ because for me, I would give that title exclusively to G.O. <hehe…no surprise> In addition to his striking good looks, G.O’s talent and voice would invariably make anyone sit up and take notice while he was on stage or screen. He may not have been officially labeled MBLAQ’s visual, but he nevertheless was, and consistently is, noticeable.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 578

It is Sunday and we are wrapping up yet another week of G.O’s service. Sundays always suggest a day of rest and leisure and as such, seem like perfect days for something sweet and inspirational. I completely forgot about the cover of A Whole New World from the Aladdin OST G.O and Su sang together back during Tykeys days. When Tykeys were being introduced to the world in 2007, it was wonderful that they were given a platform to showcase their vocal skills singing in English as well as in their native Korean. When G.O sings, his voice automatically translates the music into its own language regardless of the song’s given language. That language being of course, the language of the heart. It has no real translation and is all vibration and sensation. As a native English-speaker however, when G.O sings in English, it makes experiencing his art extra special.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 577

If I told you you were beautiful, would you date me on the regular?

Sometimes a Vocal Virtuosity moment shows up when I least expect it. So as you all know, I joined the MBLAQ party train late in the game. As a result, I missed a lot. A-LOT. Even if G.O had to complete four years of military service I still do not think that would give me enough time to see, hear and experience everything he has done these past ten years he has been living his dream as a singer, composer and actor. There is SO MUCH. I love it of course as it is keeping me busy while he is away. So today I discovered something I had not seen (or heard) before and I knew immediately that I wanted to secure it in the Vocal Virtuosity archives. I know all of you dedicated MBLAQ-philes remember the ETN Entertainment News Interview back on 23 June 2010. You also know then that even if it was brief, G.O covered some Justin Timberlake.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 574

I think you will agree that the overall exercise of this countdown series has placed me in a perpetual state of nostalgia. I suppose it is not all that surprising given the parcels of history I have been sharing throughout these past 500+ days. Sometimes I wonder if the nostalgia makes fans sad in some respects. It is undeniable that MBLAQ has evolved and changed since their debut in more ways than simply the change in dynamics from a five man group to three. Still, the journey to the now is an important part of their collective as well as individual journeys. Therefore, I like to look back, even way back like I will do today with a From The Studio moment and the MBC Chin Chin radio performance of This Love.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 572

Ten days into the month of September and the updates continue. In his latest posted in the early evening hours of 10 September, G.O recycled the caption of his previous update once again captioning his upload that these days he is really happy. His really happy is making our Sunday before a long work week that much more sweeter. Agree? Happy-laced survival reports are quickly becoming my favorite.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 570

Even though we all can surmise by the barrage of survival report/updates G.O has been supplying us over the past seven months that he is not only doing well, but is also happy, it was really good (and I mean really REALLY good) to hear him actually say it..er, well, write it. G.O took to his Instagram account for some Friday night updating last night posting two pictures, one of which was another sigh-inducing selca.
