The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 521

I am not sure if you are aware, but Seoypyeonje is returning to the Korean musical theater stage next month. Directed again by Lee Gina, it returns with some familiar faces. Both Cha Ji Yeon and Lee Ja Ram each will return as Song Hwa, as will Seo Bum Seok in the role of Yoo Bong. However, there will be three new faces in the role of Dong Ho (Park Yeong Soo, Kim Jae Beom and Kang Pil Seok). As much as I love this wonderful musical and trust the direction of Lee Gina, I admit that I am still feeling a bit sad over the fact that is being revived without G.O. Then again, we all have to wonder if G.O would have even been cast again in the role (I think so); and if so, would he have accepted the offer to return? In any event, the news of the reprisal has made me drift back to G.O’s time on the Seopyeonje stage. So a little Dong Ho One Shot love on this 521st day of his service.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 520

I really thought that I would settle into a fan meet/fan sign fan cam for today’s Fan-Camming Friday moment. That was my plan any way. But whenever I come across a cam of G.O singing, the choice is automatically made for me! This happened today when I came across a cam of G.O performing his second digital single, Play That Song during the Seoul Sensation Tour in November 2013. Usually come Friday, I am cranked up for the weekend. Not today. No, today, I want to ease into Friday with grace and romance. Is there any better way to do that than with G.O’s velvety voice?

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 517

He probably would disagree, but I think G.O singing a song entitled ‘Superstar’ was telling of his own artistic trajectory in Korean popular music. It had to have been an amazing moment back in October 2009 for the young vocalist to be singing the Luther Vandross version of The Carpenters’ hit at Rain’s Legend of Rainism show. This was basically a debut solo stage for G.O as MBLAQ’s main vocal. A solo stage in front of Rain’s fans singing a Western song in English no less. Mind-blowing! G.O singing Superstar has Vocal Virtuosity written all over it; but instead of sharing the cam from the actual stage performance, I am opting for the rehearsal clip because it is 1:12 minutes of sweet vocal magic.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 516

Recently G.O updated his Instagram profile picture to a picture of himself during the Broken era. It brought back a flood of memories of that very special time in the spring of 2014. I wondered if he was feeling nostalgic and what could have prompted that picture choice. Not that I am complaining. Hardly. He completely owned the elegance of that era with a mature sophistication that fully complemented his evolution and growth as an artist. But while he was going all nostalgic with Broken, I found myself going nostalgic with Mirror. It is a G.O One Shot .gif day but since it is a new week, I am going to supplement it with a couple of pictures.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 514

What I have learned from watching G.O in variety programming is that I really do not have to understand all that he is saying. I feel the same way when I listen to him sing. I generally can follow along when I have an idea of what is going on. Sure there are times when I want to know exactly what he is saying or singing. Absolutely. Because I think he is bright and humorous, I want to be in on the information or joke as well as be able to fully grasp his many play on words. When it comes to song, I am less stringent in wanting to understand because I feel what he is singing and trying to convey. Today I have a Playful G.O moment wherein I have no idea what is going on and there are no subtitles to help. All I know is that whatever Seung Ho was reading, G.O had a reaction for every thought. Traveling back to a May 2010 broadcast of the MNET Japan Star VJ Show, like a little jumping bean, G.O could not contain his energy.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 513

As I sit down to write my 513th post of this series I am even surprised by my own perseverance. Then I consider the subject and realize there will never be enough time to say all that I would want to say and share about this amazing bias of mine. Oh I am sure the number of eye rolls exceed the number of days thus completed but I will not waiver in my support. I knew that when G.O made his mark on me back in April 2014, I was in it for the long haul. I have loved every moment of this journey. In looking over my countdown log, I note that it has been some time since I gave Mirror some love. All of the sudden I had this incredible urge to see some G.O-focused cam of him performing Mirror. So back we go for this Fan-Camming Friday to early August 2015 when our trio performed at the KT Wiz Civic Supporters Festival.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 511

It is the middle of the week so why not a little Fan-ART-astic fan art today? It is Day 511. Can you believe that in less than a month’s time, G.O will have under 200 days left to serve? Each day I feel the excitement growing. Seriously, sometimes I feel like I am five years old! It is probably that child-like wonder in me that really appreciates fan art. I know I have said this before, but if I could draw, my model of choice would be G.O. However, since I cannot, I will continue to ardently admire those who do. Today’s offering comes from the incredibly prolific Victoria Dmitrieva, also known as SakuTori.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 509

Sometimes the best captures in picture form are those wherein the subject is unaware a camera is being pointed at him or her. Even though G.O is pretty keen on locating cameras in a crowd, there are many times when he is not particularly paying attention. Don’t get me wrong, I love, love, LOVE when he locks eyes with a camera’s lens (especially those cameras being operated by fans). However, I love the oblivious ones as well because they sometimes capture a thoughtful, quiet or reflective moment. My One Shot for today is one of those captures.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 508

I admit that the closer we get to G.O’s discharge day, the more anxious I become over what he will do when he returns. My list for him is long <hehehe> as I would love to see him pursue many things. To me, G.O has an all encompassing talent that will allow him to explore many different artistic genres. At the foundation of it all is without question: music. With so many avenues of music that stretch beyond singing, G.O’s opportunities will be many. As he is no stranger to the OST, I hope that we will hear more of his work as both a vocalist and composer for many future OSTs. In the meantime, I would like to revisit a clip of his beautiful ballad from the Dr. Stranger OST, 내일이 안 올 것처럼 [Like Tomorrow Won’t Come] in a cappella form. A true Vocal Virtuosity moment.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 507

There are a million ways in which I could show you how humble G.O is. But you really only need to meet him to experience it. In my opinion, humbleness is something that cannot be faked. It is either a part of who you are, or it is not. Some may mistake humbleness as self-doubt or low self-worth. But being humble is different. Markers of self-doubt or self-worth might include phrases like, I can’t or I am not good enough. Whereas I believe humbleness may be marked by phrases such asI will work harder or I will learn and improve, even in the wake of accolades. G.O has been told countless times from fans, contemporaries, producers, directors, and the like that he possesses a unique and special talent; yet he always reminds us that he will try harder or do better. This could not have been better demonstrated than when he received the 8th Korean Musical Awards award for best newcomer actor for his portrayal of the tragic young pansori artist Dong Ho in Seopyeonje.
