There is no remedy to help calm the fluttering of the heart, the emotional overload and cacophony of feels I experience when G.O sings in English. Of course, I love when he sings in Korean. Well, I just love when he sings. Period. And yes, Korean may be the language he speaks, but I think it is music that is the language of his heart.
It is true that music will always be a language that bridges the gap of understanding, a vibrational language that need not be understood in word when conveyed with honest, pure and passionate emotion. Nevertheless, Seung Ho, G.O and Cheondung’s offering of Maroon 5’s This Love (in English) on 아이콘 [Icons] was nothing short of heart-stopping.

Imagine you have discovered a way to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. A light that represented independence and a place for you to finally enjoy freedom of expression while in pursuit of a new direction to nurture your passion. A safe place for you to thrive without suppression and abuse. You would reach for it with both hands and hold on tight, wouldn’t you?

Nothing could have prepared me for the moment the curtain opened at the Universal Arts Center Theater in Seoul on the evening of April 8, 2014, and G.O, very powerfully in his best rock & roll swag, began to walk downstage towards the audience in the opening moments of Seopyeonje. It was a moment I won’t soon forget and one etched in my heart forever. For this 81st day of G.O’s service, I want to focus on a later scene however, when he sang The Platters’ classic hit from 1958, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes ~ in English! There will never be words adequate to describe the emotions that rushed through me at that moment….or even throughout the whole of this amazing musical.

For an actor, I would suspect that a one-dimensional character would perhaps be easier to interpret but ultimately lack challenge. The tender rebel Kang Hyun Woo in the jukebox musical 광화문 연가 [Gwanghwamun Sonata] was a demanding role for a first time musical theater actor. Nuanced and layered, it gave G.O the wonderful opportunity to explore his range as actor playing a character opposite to his own personality and demeanor.

It is hard to imagine that in previous productions of the musical 바람의나라 [The Kingdom of the Winds] that the part of Prince Ho Dong’s spirit animal, the Phoenix 병아 리 [Byungari – baby chicken, or chick] was played by a male actor. Inasmuch as I believe Byungari was really neither male nor female specifically, I could not imagine any one better opposite G.O in the part than Kim Hye Won. Hence, I will refer to the Phoenix as a she.

I almost let it slip by without commemorating it. Almost . . .

2014. What a year. Inasmuch as I have encouraged myself to not worry about the future, or dwell on the past, I cannot help but remember 2014 for so many reasons. Even if the year ended on a rather dour note with the news of changes in MBLAQ’s dynamic, it is impossible to deny that up until that point, G.O was having a spectacular year, both as main vocal for MBLAQ and on his own as a musical theater actor.

The first five months of 2014 were pretty spectacular for our gentle main vocal, G.O. As the year opened, he was in rehearsals for Seopyeonje which subsequently opened in March. By April, he was knee-deep in promotions for MBLAQ’s 6th mini album, Broken. At the same time, he was cast in a second musical, 바람의나라 [Kingdom of the Winds], scheduled to open in May, a mere 3 days after his final performance in Seopyeonje. He was perhaps at his busiest, yet I don’t think I have seen him happier.

G.O seems to be a man of many consistencies. And when you are consistent, it does not mean you simply want to maintain a comfort level, or a status quo. No. To me, being consistent shows a sign of deep loyalty, reverence and respect to people, work, an idea…or, for G.O, a song.
