The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 304

What is his process? Does the melody come and then the lyrics? Are there sometimes only lyrics and no melody? Or only a melody which he gently sets aside to contemplate or place before collaborators for words? Perhaps it is a maelstrom of words and melody that collide simultaneously within his heart and soul wherein all of the parts piece together like an intrique puzzle and a song is born. Whatever his process, G.O has proven himself to be an adept lyricist and composer. Our first glimpse of his writing prowess came with Tykeys 한번만 [Only Once], but with MBLAQ, we had our first taste with 돌아올 수 없는 [Can’t Come Back], his powerful dance track composition which provided the backdrop to Mir’s lyrics. Traveling back today to Blaq Style ~ 3D Edition, to honor Composer G.O.

Blaq Style was released in January 2011 and followed up with a repackaged re-release of the album Blaq Style 3D Edition in February 2011. During promotions, 돌아올 수 없는 [Can’t Come Back] did not make the rounds with the men on the various music competition programs they were appearing on from January through March 2011, and it wasn’t until the Blaq% promotions in February 2012 when they performed it on the M Countdown Fan Cafe special stage broadcast on 2 February 2012.

Arranged by 블랙아이드필승’s Rado, 돌아올 수 없는 [Can’t Come Back] is filled with aggressive synthesizers, a pulsating beat and powerful vocals. It also has a dual rap which for some reason I absolutely love. I always feel like Mir steps up his rap game like he is in an actual duel. Ha….I think G.O would appreciate that wordplay.^^

What I really love about this song is how it pulls back with restraint, the lithe synthesizer adding gentle and melodic foundation during the verses and then goes in attack mode during the chorus. Awesome. Then of course G.O’s vocals which on one hand are plaintive . . .

Bad girl 난 이제
[Bad girl I don’t want]
더는 살고 싶지 않아
[to live any longer]
네가 내 전부였단 말야
[You were my everything]
한번 더 날 위해 웃어줘 Oh
[Smile for me one more time Oh]

No no no no no no
No no no no no no
너 없이 어떡하라고
[What do I do without you]
숨조차 쉴 수 없잖아
[I can’t even breath]
나를 돌아봐
[Look back at me]
Oh 내 품에 돌아와
[Oh Come back to my arms]

But then he explodes all around the chorus with his expansive and powerful improvs. I cannot say it enough and I don’t mind sounding like a broken record for the next 427 days (and beyond), G.O’s vocals are spectacular. But what makes him even a more incredible artist is that he never stops working on perfecting that which (I feel) is already perfect, his craft, his art, his music. And I am confident as he continues to mature, he will discover more facets of his voice that have yet to be discovered. I look forward to his journey and the music he will create along the way.
