Fangirling 2019: A Retrospective

Being forced to shelter-in-place during what is perhaps turning into one of the most incredible and frightening situations I may see in my lifetime (yes, I am talking about the COVID-19 pandemic) has given me time to reflect on the tumultuous fangirl journey I have been on these past seven years. By the close of 2019, I realized that I had burst through a rather stringent guardrail when it came to Korean entertainment and in particular, Korean music. After my honey baby bias G.O of MBLAQ completed his military service, went from AfreecaTV BJ to YouTuber and yes, even became a husband, I kind of went on a bender. I wanted to write about my explorative fangirl year of 2019 before 2019 ended but failed to actually sit down and do so. Then, I pretty much abandoned the blog altogether. Now that I am in forced lockdown, I really feel the urge to return, show the blog some love, and write again. I have truly missed writing. So, humor me if you will, and let me tell you about my 2019 fangirl adventures  (albeit a little late and wordy) and my hopes for 2020.

On My Playlist ~ Sunrise [Got7 JB]

I have to admit that over the past year I have been listening to more and more Korean R&B. So it stands to reason then that when a K-pop group, member(s) and/or sub-unit(s) within those groups take a trip on the R&B highway, I have been finding myself boarding that bus. Got7 is one of those groups. And even though they have been pumping out music since 2014, my sheltered, single-focused fangirl ears never wandered to have a listen. All I can say is this: I missed out . . . like in, missed the bus completely! Specifically where leader JB is concerned.

The Fangirl Adventure Log Retires

Hello everyone! It has been a month now since my beloved G.O was discharged from his mandatory military service.  Some of you may be wondering why I have abruptly stopped writing about him since his discharge. I can assure you that it has nothing to do with a break in my love or support. It is just time to quietly retire this blog. It is clear that The Fangirl Adventure Log started out on one path but quickly became a vehicle to celebrate the artistry of G.O. From the moment I chose to include G.O on my very short list of K-Shots of Hot, the entire direction and indeed focus of the blog became an homage to him, and stayed that course through 17 February 2018. And while it is true that I could continue to write about his journey as a BJ [Broadcast Jockey] on the live streaming site AfreecaTV, I am choosing not to do so. I encourage all to check out his broadcasts which he began on the evening following his fan meeting on 24 February. He has gone live every night since at 10:00PM KST. As with any live broadcast, things can be unpredictable, but G.O seems to have found a nice groove as a BJ, is doing well and continues to expand his audience. I support him in this endeavor (and all he endeavors to do) and always look forward to each new broadcast.

As for The Fangirl Adventure Log, all the content presently contained here will remain [with the exception of any broken YouTube links – I have no control over those which are not mine]. So if you want to revisit the days we counted down towards G.O’s military discharge, you are are always welcome, as each of those 730 days (and more) will be here to greet you.

The End Is Only The Beginning ~ Welcome Back, G.O!

And with a huge sigh and jubilant smile I can finally say . . . G.O has successfully completed his military service!!  This end however signifies a greater beginning. In less than one week’s time we will get what many of us have longed for since he enlisted (and perhaps even before that): a new song!! Yes, back on 10 February, when he chatted with his fans in MBLAQ’s Daum Cafe, G.O said a new digital single will be released on 23 February (a duet). He also said he has a schedule set for the four days following that release, one of which we already know about: his Fan Meeting on 24 February. The days that follow are mysteries that will be revealed at that fan meeting. But he did mention that more new music will be coming in March-April. The excitement is almost too much to contain! Are you ready? Because I know that I am. I have been ready since 18 February 2016!!

Welcome Back, G.O!!!

We have missed you and are ready to feel the magic of your music, your talent and indeed, your artistic heart, once again.~😍

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 730

Happy New Year!! 새해 복 많이 받으세요!! And, Happy Last Day of G.O’s Military Service!!! We made it. We really truly made it! True, G.O did make it bearable by staying in touch throughout the two long years he has been away, but I remember how forlorn we all were that first day ~ it seems like an eternity ago yet here we are at the 730th day. It is a holiday so I am wondering if G.O is actually off of work on his last day of service. The Lunar New Year is a high holiday across Asia and this year of the Dog celebration actually began yesterday in South Korea. So, has G.O officially completed his service and is already discharged, or will he actually be discharged tomorrow? It’s a mystery! But in keeping with my schedule here on the Countdown, it is a Fan-Camming Friday and I plan to end with another dose of nostalgia. This time coming from a moment close to my own heart, Seopyeonje. I am probably most G.O nostalgic when it comes to Seopyeonje because that is where I saw and met him for the first time. I usher out Fan-Camming Fridays and, thus, this series altogether with a revisit to the 3 March 2014 Seopyeonje showcase.

The nostalgic moment for today goes way back to December 2009. It was probably one of the earliest interviews G.O gave following his debut with MBLAQ. I could be wrong but since it was December 2009, I am probably partially correct.^^ This is an early Star Interview and I love it because I feel as if I am meeting G.O for the first time all over again. More nostalgia today because G.O’s variety show bank is filled with hours and pictures of memories. And you know how much I enjoy traveling back to them and sharing them here. It is a Wednesday, Day 728 of this countdown and there are three days remaining in G.O’s service. It is also the day of love, Valentine’s Day. However, I love on G.O every day so every day is like Valentine’s Day to me.^^ Anyway, my rule book for this V Day is calling for some cute and adorable G.O to help perk up the mid-week and maybe even make you all hearts-in-eyes swoony. Let’s go back to a November 2010 recording of SBS’s long-running and very popular variety show, Star King.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 727

We often put our favorite artists and idols on pedestals far above others and at times, even above ourselves. I know I am guilty of it where G.O is concerned and when I find myself doing it, I pause and remind myself that he is an ordinary man whose life has had some extraordinary moments. At the end of the day however, G.O is human just like you and I. It is very endearing to me when he reminds us of that by way of updating his SNS in the wee hours of the morning with a picture or pictures of the past. It is endearing because he really is not so high on that pedestal to have forgotten his journey and at times seems rather nostalgic over it. Maybe that is what happened on 9 February when he updated his Instagram account with the above. The bulk of this countdown series has been an exercise in nostalgia even when my own history with this amazing artist of man is only in its fourth year. There are four days remaining in his service and in keeping with the trend, I have decided that I will see this series end with equal nostalgia.

It has not been too often when I have sat down to write an entry for this countdown that I have found myself without any real notion of what to write. I have had a steady map that I have followed for the past 725 days. Today, I was blank. I know I have not covered every single performance, variety show clip, or even scratched the surface of sharing a fraction of the photographs that exist of this beautiful man. But I have tried to show you little pieces of G.O to help get us through his time away completing his military service. I was browsing Naver blogs when I came across a blog for Korean clothing designer Vantvaart and there was G.O. So I thought why not celebrate the endorsement along with a revisit of G.O’s wonderful performance of 못잊겠어요 [I Can’t Forget] on the Immortal Song 2 stage for the King of Kings Special on 19 November 2011.
