The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 316

I am not going to lie. I can pair (ship), whatever you want to call it, G.O with anyone and find something interesting or special about the dynamic. Apart from his actual family members however, I would be hard-pressed to find a relationship as special or delightful as that which G.O has with MBLAQ’s maknae, Mir.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 305

Maybe the holidays are making me a bit more sensitive and sentimental but lately I have been thinking a lot about Prince Ho Dong, his story and more importantly, how wonderfully G.O portrayed the young tender prince in the 2014 production of 바람의나라 [The Kingdom of the Winds]. The One Shot today is a delightful capture (and memory) from rehearsals.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 297

When G.O was cast as one of three actors to portray the tragic and emotionally fragile Dong Ho in 서편제 [Seopyeonje], I was still clearing my own path towards him so I missed all of the excitement of hearing the news of his involvement in the musical. I can only imagine what it must have felt like when news of G.O returning to the musical stage broke. As I have mentioned before, Seopyeonje was my introduction to G.O so it holds special importance for me personally, but it was also a game-changer for him as a musical actor (whether he wants to believe that or not)! For today then, something simple. A look back at the moment when he introduced himself as one of the musical actors cast in the show.

Love, Laughter and Seung Ho In The Rain ~ The Musical Sabita

Having now successfully conquered some pretty serious and lingering jet lag following my return from Seoul late last month, I am finally coherent enough to set my thoughts down about the musical 사랑은비를타고 [Love Is In The Rain], or as it is affectionately known in the Korean musical theater world, 사비타 [Sabita]. Since I attended the musical with the express intention of seeing MBLAQ’s leader Yang Seung Ho in his role as Dong Hyun, the focus primarily will be on his performance, but admit that I will include thoughts overall on his cast mates and the show overall. Additionally, I am including some fan account material to expose confirm Seung Ho’s incredibly sweet fan service. Yes, MBLAQ’s quietly charismatic leader is more endearing than he leads us to believe, a hundred fold more talented than he is given credit for and yes, more handsome in person than any picture can live up to. For this post, I have taken off my G.O-tinted bias glasses to give Seung Ho my undivided attention and in return, he pleasantly surprised me.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 75

For an actor, I would suspect that a one-dimensional character would perhaps be easier to interpret but ultimately lack challenge. The tender rebel Kang Hyun Woo in the jukebox musical 광화문 연가 [Gwanghwamun Sonata] was a demanding role for a first time musical theater actor. Nuanced and layered, it gave G.O the wonderful opportunity to explore his range as actor playing a character opposite to his own personality and demeanor.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 62

It is hard to imagine that in previous productions of the musical 바람의나라 [The Kingdom of the Winds] that the part of Prince Ho Dong’s spirit animal, the Phoenix 병아 리 [Byungari – baby chicken, or chick] was played by a male actor. Inasmuch as I believe Byungari was really neither male nor female specifically, I could not imagine any one better opposite G.O in the part than Kim Hye Won. Hence, I will refer to the Phoenix as a she.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 25

The first five months of 2014 were pretty spectacular for our gentle main vocal, G.O. As the year opened, he was in rehearsals for Seopyeonje which subsequently opened in March. By April, he was knee-deep in promotions for MBLAQ’s 6th mini album, Broken. At the same time, he was cast in a second musical, 바람의나라 [Kingdom of the Winds], scheduled to open in May, a mere 3 days after his final performance in Seopyeonje. He was perhaps at his busiest, yet I don’t think I have seen him happier.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 2

I feel very fortunate to have had my first G.O experience come in the form of musical theater, and with two very prestigious roles. I have a feeling G.O has yet to fully embrace the fact that he was as good as he was in all three of his musical roles, and that he has this wonderful and natural ability to wed music with acting. Moreover, he does it with an effortless honesty, grace and ease.
